Hard Times: Jeff Beadle
I wrote the Hard Times chorus a number of years ago knowing
that it had potential, but could not find verses that were up to par
with the sound I was going for. I later revisited the song while
listening to a voice memo in my van. All of a sudden it came to
me. I parked the van and feverishly started writing out the lyrics,
went into the house picked up my guitar and everything I wrote
down fit snug.
I found that this song was about pouring out all of the confusion
and questions I’ve had and lived through for the past couple of
years, some contemplative some political some questioning my
own mortality. Perhaps a couple years ago when I had the chorus
written it just wasn’t the right time to rush the song out, it needed
to simmer.
I wanted the song to have a swampy feel to it. I typically don’t
write swampy, bluesy feeling music, but for some reason this
song was calling for it.
Fast forward a few months and I found myself in Impression
Recording Studios in Niagara Falls, Ontario with Mark Rogers and
his son Myles at the helm. They had a good idea of what my vision
for the song was and put the plan into action.
Hard Times is simple, hard hitting and musically what I would call
loose or slightly behind the beat. It’s near and dear to me and I
think speaks to regular working class people like me. An ode to
the times we are living in right at this very moment.
